A New Initiative – Making Disciples who can Counsel Biblically through completing the Self-Confrontation Class

Hope

CBCM from the beginning was designed to make more and better disciples.  Since most of the people who come to CBCM for counseling are Christians, we mostly are about making better disciples.  Some aspect of sanctification is being worked out in their lives.  They are in need of change in order to be conformed to the image of Christ.  Helping people with life change like this is not a gift.  It is an aspect to maturing and growing spiritually to a point in one’s spiritual life whereby they can confront or admonish those in need.  When and how does a baby Christians move into maturity where they can even discern the need for counsel let alone be ready to do so?

Ephesians 4:11-16 explains how Pastor/Teachers are “to prepare the saints to do the work of ministry”.  Personally I (Doug) feel like I have helped Wendy and Mike become more effective disciples.  I have touched some lives of others outside our ministry too. But I want to be more intentional within our own church body in training others to do the biblical counseling work of ministry.  First I want them to learn to self-counsel through self-confrontation.  After they lear

n to do that then they are well on their way to counseling others.   Matthew 7 talks about first removing the beam from your own eye so that you can see the speck in your brother’s eye.  Someone else put it this way, “learn to be a good lumberjack before you try your hand at eye surgery.”  Spiritually speaking that is wise advice.

My goal is that God would move our church to the point where what Paul said in Romans 15:14 can be true for CBC.   “Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.“  My prayer is that numbers of CBC’ers would be filled with all knowledge and be also able to admonish one another when the need arises.

A series of resources were created back in 1978 to help accomplish this goal in churches.  It has been edited and reprinted many times over.  It is published by the Biblical Counseling Foundation and is called Self-Confrontation“a manual for in-depth discipleship”

It is my desire to offer a course utilizing this manual for individuals of CBC.  The course will present essential biblical principles that can change your life.  If you earnestly desire to overcome problems and to develop spiritual maturity, you must be willing to confront your failures and shortcomings and make appropriate changes according to biblical standards (Romans 12:1-2; 2 Corinthians 5:9; Colossians 3:1-17).  If you do this, you will be able to grow up in the Lord Jesus Christ and be in a position to help others in an effective biblical manner (Matthew 7:1-5; 2 Corinthians 1:3-4; Galatians 6:1-5; 2 Timothy 2:2).

The course has two purposes:

  • To teach you how to approach circumstances, relationships, and situations of life from a biblical perspective and to experience victory and contentment in all of life’s trials, testings, and problems.
  • To prepare you to help others face and deal with their problems biblically.

In order to receive the intended benefit the most from this course, you should plan to spend a minimum of thirty minutes to an hour each day in doing the homework.  Consider doing your homework as a part of your daily devotional time. The manual is broken into 24 lessons. A class will be scheduled for two hours each 1st, 3rd, and 5thTuesday of every month starting with October 16thand including Oct. 30th, Nov. 6thand 20th, Dec. 11th, Jan, 15th, 29th, Feb. 5th, 19th, Mar. 5th, 19th, Apr. 2nd, 16th, 30th, May 7th, 21st, Jun, 4th, 18th, Jul. 2nd, 16th, 30th, Aug. 6th, 20th, Sep. 3rd, 17th.

A class lesson consists of:

  • Review of Scripture Memory verses and other homework
  • Explanation of biblical principles associated with the lesson
  • Teaching on the practical application of God’s Word to your life
  • Discussion of a biblical counseling case study (introduced in Lesson 9 and continuing throughout the remainder of the course)
  • Assignment of homework

I hope you are eager to dive into this discipleship pursuit.  If you have never been discipled, this could be a step in the right direction.  If you are interested contact Doug at (814) 573-9326 so he can order the Self-Confrontationmanual for you.
